Important Notice: Beware of new fraud schemes targeting customers' assets in banking transactions
22/10/2025
In recent times, online fraud has become increasingly sophisticated and widespread, causing significant financial damage to customers. To help you stay vigilant and safeguard your Current Accounts, Cards, and banking transactions, Vietnam International Bank (VIB) would like to share the latest common fraud tactics and provide safety guidelines as follows:
Common Fraud Tactics:
1. Impersonating Bank Staff to approach customers with scenarios such as:
- Assisting with biometric authentication by persuading customers to connect via social media or messaging apps and requesting personal information, photos of ID documents, facial images, or video calls to collect voice and gestures — all intended to gain control of the customer’s Current Account or use the information for illegal purposes.
- Offering false and non-existent promotional programs such as: a 3-year card annual fee waiver; advising to temporarily cancel the card for 1 day, or lock the card for 2 hours to avoid incurring the annual fee; informing of a card maintenance fee to suggest helping customers get a refund; or instructing customers to perform a transaction to receive a 10%-15% cashback when shopping. After the customer trusts them, the perpetrator asks the customer to provide confidential card information (card number, CVV number, OTP code) over the phone or via the perpetrator's application/link. From there, the perpetrator steals the customer's money by using the card information to purchase goods and services.
Note: VIB does NOT cooperate with any third-party agency to adjust credit scores, does NOT handle card cancellation or limit increases via phone or message, and does NOT provide unauthorized services via unidentified calls.
2. Creating fake websites and applications (e.g., VNeID, Ministry of Public Security, Tax Department) embedded with malware to control customers' devices, secretly collect banking credentials, and execute unauthorized transfers from their Current Accounts.
3. Posing as government officials or service providers (electricity/water/telecom companies) who call and instruct customers to update their address details by accessing fake links or installing malicious apps to steal funds from their accounts.
4. Pretending to be delivery staff or couriers, contacting customers to inform them about parcels requiring unpaid fees, or impersonating travel agencies, hotels, or resorts advertising tourism deals — then directing victims to fake payment links or fraudulent accounts to steal their money.
5. Exploiting loopholes during card payment at merchants, fraudsters swap the genuine chip on the card with a fake one, then use the stolen chip to carry out fraudulent transactions.
Taking advantage of the sensitive context following several recent data breaches at government agencies, organizations, and businesses in Vietnam, fraudsters may gain unauthorized access to customers’ personal information — such as full name, date of birth, phone number, email address, home address, and ID number — to gain the customer’s trust and trick them into providing confidential banking information.
To protect yourself from these scams, VIB strongly recommends:
DO NOT:
- DO NOT share your personal information, card/account details, login credentials, passwords, or OTPs with anyone, in any form. VIB will never ask for your confidential information.
- DO NOT follow instructions from people claiming to be officials from government agencies, service providers, couriers, card delivery staff, or bank employees via phone, message, or social media.
- DO NOT install unknown apps, click suspicious links, or enable accessibility permissions for unverified apps.
- DO NOT sell, rent, lend, or open Current Accounts for others. These actions may lead to illegal usage and are considered violations of the law.
