Important warning about bank fraud and impersonation scams

With the increasing trend of payments via accounts and cards, the situation of online fraud in Vietnam has become increasingly complex, with more sophisticated methods that have caused significant losses to users.

In order to raise awareness and ensure the safety of your accounts and transactions, Vietnam International Bank (VIB) would like to provide an update on common types of fraud and offer recommendations for safe transactions as follows:

Fraud risks to pay attention to in banking transactions:

1.    Impersonating the Bank to approach customers with the following scenarios:

  • Pretending to assist customers with biometric authentication by luring them into connecting via online messaging applications, and then requesting personal information, photos of identification documents, facial images, and/or initiating video calls to collect voice and gestures. These actions are intended to gain unauthorized access to the customer’s account or use such information for illegal purposes.
  • Making customer care calls offering promotions such as annual fee waivers, credit card limit increases, or processing card cancellation requests. Once the customer trusts them, the scammer instructs the customer to follow procedures that involve sending photos of their card details via banking apps, accessing suspicious links to download and install applications, or entering personal and sensitive card information (card number, CVV, OTP) on the provided link. The scammer then uses this information to make unauthorized purchases of goods or services, thereby appropriating the customer’s funds.

2.    Phishing websites and applications for governmental services (such as the VneID app, the Ministry of governmental Security, the General Department of Taxation, etc.) that include malicious code and take control of customers’ devices, then perpetrate fraud and pilfer property.

3.    Impersonating delivery staff/e-commerce platforms, informing the customer that there is an order to be confirmed and requesting payment via a fake link.

VIB firmly commits that it does NOT partner with any external entities to offer loans, and does NOT provide services such as unsolicited credit limit increases, annual fee waivers, or any unauthorized services through phone calls from unidentified numbers claiming to be from VIB.

Preventive measures against fraud in banking transactions:

Customer please: 

  • Only perform biometric authentication via the MyVIB Digital Banking application or at VIB Branches/Transaction Offices.
  • DO NOT provide personal information / Card / Current Account details or OTP to anyone under any circumstances. VIB never requests customers to provide OTPs or login passwords.
  • DO NOT install applications or access links of unknown origin, and DO NOT grant Accessibility permissions to any application.
  • DO NOT sell, lease, lend, or open Current Accounts on behalf of others, to avoid enabling criminals to misuse such information or accounts for illegal transactions. These acts are violations of the law.
  • SHOULD immediately block Cards or Current Accounts (via the MyVIB app or by contacting Hotline 1900 2200 / 1800 8195) upon suspicion of fraud.
  • SHOULD report to the authorities upon detecting any request for money transfers, or for providing personal, card, or account information.
  • SHOULD proactively manage Cards via the MyVIB Digital Banking app by: temporarily locking individual payment functions (e.g., online/ATM/POS/contactless/foreign transactions), adjusting daily transaction limits, and online spending limits as needed.
  • SHOULD regularly update yourself on criminal methods and fraud tactics through official VIB channels, including:
