Important warning about bank fraud and impersonation scams
21/05/2024
In recent years, high-tech crime has become increasingly complicated and pervasive in a variety of forms, as well as more sophisticated. To boost vigilance and guarantee the safety of your information and assets, VIB would like to provide you with the following safety transaction suggestions during this period:
Fraud risks to pay attention to in banking transactions:
- Fraudulent appropriation of customs clearance money by impersonating VIB informing customers about support for CHANGING CREDIT CARD TYPE: The fraudster visits the customer in person and requests their physical card, phone number, and password for the MyVIB app in order to obtain information (card number, CVV number, OTP code) and execute a credit card withdrawal.
- High-tech criminals create fake websites and phony emails to offer illegal credit card services such as limit increases, card maturity, annual fee waiver/cancellation, and more. They collect customer information and images such as citizen ID, identity photo, front and back of card, and OTP code to:
• Appropriate money through credit card transactions; or
• Appropriate money through credit score enhancement service with fake credit report "CICB - Creditinfo" and ask customers to transfer money to the fraudster's personal account.
VIB fully commits to having no relationship or cooperation with these organizations, and offering no limit increases over the phone or illegal services via calls from fake phone numbers or phony emails.
- Phishing websites and applications for governmental services (such as the VneID app, the Ministry of governmental Security, the General Department of Taxation, etc.) that include malicious code, in particular:
• Phishers posing as representatives of these organizations use social media to contact, message, or become friends with users in an attempt to dupe them into downloading and installing phony apps on their phones or clicking on phony links to install them;
• Once the user installs the app, malicious malware will be downloaded to the phone. From there, the subject can gain access to the user's device and steal OTP codes, login credentials, and personal information from financial apps in order to perpetrate fraud and pilfer property.
- Phishing apps to gain control of mobile devices: In order to take control of mobile devices, fraudsters intentionally deceive consumers into clicking on links and installing phony application software that contains dangerous malware, in particular:
• By providing accessibility permission to phony programs on Android operating system devices or the Message Filtering function (iPhone) and Apple ID verification with iOS operating system devices.
• After gaining authorization, the fraudster will remotely monitor and take control of the victim's device in order to pilfer assets and bank account information.
